Chris Coates is a Presidential Honors graduate of Westervelt College. Having worked in a wide variety of offices ranging from single partner sole proprietorships to multi-partner national accounting agencies, Coates is well-suited to explain the real-world applications of the courses he teaches. Coates currently runs a bookkeeping, accounting, and small business consulting firm that specializes in small- to medium-sized businesses.

This course introduces financial accounting, GAAP, the Accounting Cycle and financial statements. It also covers merchandizing, accounting information systems and inventory costing and valuation. Students also gain an appreciation for the importance of this discipline to business financial management.
- Applied Business Communication I & II
Applied Business Communication I
Students learn the importance of proofreading and the attention to detail required in a professional office setting. This course focuses on the correct use of the parts of speech, sentence structure, grammar, punctuation, and style.
Applied Business Communication II
This course provides students with the principles of effective writing. Emphasis is placed on the importance of professional written and verbal communication skills through a variety of assignments. Students will learn how to plan and write professional business letters.
This course introduces students to the concepts of bookkeeping as an integral and vital part of business operations. Students demonstrate their knowledge by developing general journal transactions, account reconciliation, and trial balances. Further topics include posting to the general ledger.
- Business Documentation I & II
Business Documentation I
In this course, students learn Microsoft Word and develop effective word processing skills at the core/expert level. Students will learn to use this software to create professional looking business documents including memos, letters, reports, tables, and newsletters. As well, students will develop their keyboarding skills to increase speed and accuracy to meet the fast-paced needs of today’s business office.
Business Documentation II
This course builds on skills developed in Comp608. Advanced word processing concepts will be applied to detailed documents and reports. Skills learned will include mail merges, tables, macros, and employment documents. Students will continue to build text and data input speed.
- Business Language Fundamentals
This course reviews and reinforces the “rules” of vocabulary and their relationship to the various areas of grammar. Students will benefit from understanding the meaning and proper usage of an improved vocabulary base.
- Business Mathematics
This course covers the fundamentals of business mathematics, starting with a review of the basic principles. Further topics include calculating interest, determining retail pricing and profitability, taxes, foreign exchange, and commissions.
- Business Organization I & II
Business Organization I
This course presents an overview of Canadian business and the fundamentals of the Canadian economic system. In addition, it develops an understanding of the social environment, including ethical business behaviour and social responsibilities. Students will also explore the increasing importance of global business opportunities.
Business Organization II
This course builds on knowledge learned in Bus363a. Students are introduced to the function of management in developing and operating businesses on a day-to-day basis, including an exploration of organizational structures, production and operation, and development of analytical techniques.
- Career Strategies
Taught by our professionals in Graduate Employment Services, this course is designed to train students to research and how to obtain their desired career goals. Topics covered include: current employer expectations in the selection process, winning resume styles, interview skills and techniques, and successful strategies to develop and conduct their personal career search.
- Computer Database - Access
This course utilizes Microsoft Access, a hands-on software applications course that will enable students to build the skills required to create, edit, and format a database for business. Focus is also placed on Access features and tools that will allow the student to run desired queries, create useful forms, and design reports to display database information.
- Computerized Accounting
This course concentrates on the financial reporting process using today’s software systems. Students take the information learned in Bus201 to set up company information, post transactions, record payments, and input all payroll operations. This course also provides the student with the dexterity to display and print reports, enabling the student to efficiently work in a business environment.
- Electronic Communication
Utilizing Microsoft Outlook, this course introduces students to integrated electronic mail, calendar functions, and task management. These skills will be used to efficiently communicate with others, schedule appointments and tasks, record information about personal and business contacts, and organize electronic records.
- Integrated Office Systems
Upon completion of this course, students will have acquired theory and practical training to function efficiently in today’s administrative environment. Focus is placed on the importance of professionalism, clear communication, and an understanding of ethics and legalities in an office environment. Students are trained in the application of appointment scheduling, telephone techniques, and the skills to complete various documents used in a typical office setting.
- Presentations with PowerPoint
This course prepares students to create and present Microsoft PowerPoint presentations. Students will learn to incorporate multimedia into interactive presentations and will be introduced to effective presentation techniques.
- Records Management
Upon completion of this course, the student will have a clear and concise understanding of records management in an office environment. Students benefit from the management guidelines set in order to prepare records and maintain safe, confidential, and proper storage of files.
- Small Business Management / Entrepreneurship
This course introduces each aspect of starting or managing a small business including the basic operating principles and entrepreneurial approaches to business management. Topics include market potential, product development, acquiring financial resources, organizational structure and business plan development.
- Special Event Planning
Special events include fundraising galas, conferences, product launches, conventions, meetings and corporate events. This course provides students with practical solutions to every aspect of organizing and managing special events including, venue selection, budget, scheduling, food/beverage coordinating, entertainment, media, and staffing.
- Spreadsheets for Business
This course prepares students to utilize Microsoft Excel at the core/expert level. Students will learn to work with various functions and formulas, create charts, and design and create reports utilizing numerical data
- Negotiation in the Sales Environment
This course explores the major concepts and theories of bargaining and negotiation. Students will learn to strategize, plan, and implement the negotiation process, including leverage and ethical approaches. In addition, students will take part in negotiations of varying complexity.
