Program Overview

Take advantage of the many PSW opportunities available in the Health Care industry by enrolling in Westervelt’s full-time Personal Support Worker program in Windsor, Ontario. Our training programs are designed to help you be career ready in months and learn the skills healthcare employers need.

At Westervelt, you will be fully prepared to care, provide support services, assist in activities of daily living and enhance the lives of clients families, the elderly, those in need of specialized care and individuals with physical limitations. Train in our fully ­equipped classrooms and have the opportunity to learn in an environment that is similar to how it will be in the workplace. This hands-­on PSW training will help you transition easily to your new career. At the end of the PSW program, a Facility-­Based Practicum, will allow you to practice what you’ve learned in the classroom setting in a real work environment.

Upon graduation, Personal Support Workers (PSWs) can find employment working in long term care facilities, hospitals, private companies, and more.

Curriculum

In this course, students will be introduced to the personal support worker role in community, retirement homes, long-term care homes, and/or hospital care settings. They will engage with knowledge and skills within the PSW role that require collaboration with the clients, families, supervisors, and/or other members of the interprofessional care/service team, as well as those that promote and maintain a safe and comfortable environment for clients, their families, self and others.

In this course, students will be introduced to the PSW as a collaborative member of the interprofessional care/service team in the provision of supportive care in community, retirement homes, long-term care homes and/or hospital settings. PSWs provide client-centered and client-directed care that is based on ethical principles, sensitive to diverse client and family values, beliefs and needs, and which follows the direction of the plan of care/service plan.

In this course, students will review common diseases and disorders and age related changes for each body system. They will learn about growth and development, common alterations in functioning, disease prevention, health promotion and maintenance, rehabilitation and restorative care.

In this course, students will engage in the theory of the PSW role of assisting clients across the lifespan with routine activities of daily living. Students will learn theory on the skills of assisting with household management tasks, nutrition, instrumental activities of daily living, and medication management in keeping with the direction of the plan of care/service plan and under the direction and monitoring of a regulated health professional or most accountable person in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer’s policies.

In this course, students will engage in hands-on practice to the PSW role of assisting clients across the lifespan with routine activities of daily living through the application of basic knowledge of grown and development, common alterations in functioning, disease prevention, health promotion and maintenance, rehabilitation and restorative care. Students will apply the skills of assisting with household management tasks, nutrition, instrumental activities of daily living, and medication management in keeping with the direction of the plan of care/service plan and under the direction and monitoring of a regulated health professional or most accountable person in accordance with all applicable legislation and employer’s policies.

In this course, students will learn how to identify and report situations of neglect, and potential, alleged or witnessed/actual incidents of abuse. They will discuss how to assist in the provision of culturally relevant palliative and end-of-life care to clients experiencing life threatening illness and to their families and significant other. Students will use identified approaches and best practices to apply theory on the support of positive and save behaviour in clients experiencing cognitive impairment, mental health challenges and/or responsible behaviours.

This supervised practice experience course provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from all other courses in the program with individuals in multi-level or complex care setting. A portion of this clinical experience will be devoted to working with individuals experiencing cognitive challenges. Opportunity will be provided for students to gain expertise and confidence with the role of the PSW within a continuing care facility.

This supervised practice experience course provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and skills from all other courses in the program with individuals in Community Care/Home Support-Assisted Living settings. A portion of this clinical experience will be devoted to working with individuals experiencing cognitive challenges. Opportunity will be provided for students to gain expertise and confidence with the role of the PSW within Community Care/Home Support-Assisted Living contexts.

In this course, students will learn a number of topics that will effectively have them ready to work in their field upon completion. Students will review job search and how to effectively create a resume and excel in the interview process. WHMIS will be discussed and how to safely use hazardous materials in the workplace. Students will complete Food Safety and discuss the guidelines for preparing food in the community. Finally, students will learn about managing personal finances and understand their personal expenses and benefits of creating and using a budget.
